Major control changes have taken place at Volvo Cars, the Swedish luxury carmaker, over the past decade. It is often said that Volvo Cars is owned by a Chinese multinational automotive corporation called Geely. Nonetheless, many people have a keen interest in understanding the extent to which this is true.

Geely’s Purchase of Volvo
In 2010, Geely Holding Group bought Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Company for $1.8 billion. The transaction was a significant move toward Geely’s worldwide growth plan and established it as one of the major participants in the automotive industry. Ever since then, Geely has been actively involved in managing and guiding the future direction of Volvo Cars.
Who Owns It Now?
The most recent information available suggests that Geely Holding Group still holds a substantial share in Volvo Cars. However, it would be incorrect to state categorically that 100% of Volvo is owned by Geely. Geely, the biggest shareholder, controls Volvo Cars though there are other stakeholders as well for the company operates as an autonomous firm under the Chinese conglomerate.
The Self-Governing Procedures of Volvo
Volvo Cars has managed to stay separate from Geely despite having its majority shares owned by this Chinese multinational corporation. Geely ownership revitalized the brand with many new models and record sales volumes. It lets Volvo conduct business on its own while still preserving its brand values centered around safety and innovation.
What Ownership Means for Volvo
This ownership structure has allowed Geely to support its resources behind Volvo’s global ambitions while enabling them to remain true Swedish brands at heart. Going forward, electric vehicles will account for 100% of all new launches by 2030, with this purpose set firmly in mind, Volvo aims to widen its lineup of EVs over time. Given such an audacious vision statement by their chief shareholder happens also to be Geely.
In conclusion, Geely became the principal owner after buying out Volvo Cars back in 2010; whereupon it was agreed that Volvo should continue running independently albeit under Chinese management. As a result, Geely’s acquisition of Volvo has had a positive impact on its growth objectives and agenda, specifically about electric vehicles.
