What’s the Key Initiatives in China’s "Technology Roadmap for Energy-Saving and New Energy Vehicles 3.0"

China’s “Technology Roadmap 3.0” outlines ambitious goals for automotive development, aiming for full hybridization by 2035, over 85% new energy vehicle sales by 2040, and the popularization of L4 and L5 intelligent vehicles.

On October 22, the latest "Technology Roadmap for Energy-Saving and New Energy Vehicles 3.0" (shorted as the Roadmap 3.0), revised by the China Society of Automotive Engineers, was officially released.



The Roadmap 3.0 further emphasized the goal of global auto-technology trajectory toward “low-carbon, electrified and intelligent” mobility, and determined the high-quality development of the auto industry in the next 5-15 years.


The key milestones set in the Roadmap 3.0 are as follows:

- By 2035, China will achieve full hybridization of traditional energy passenger vehicles;

- By 2040, China will see combustion-engine vehicles (HEV, PHEV, REEV) account for one third of total sale of new passenger cars; While new energy vehicle penetration will exceed 85%, among which 80% are BEVs.

- By 2024, L4 intelligent connected vehicles will achieve full popularization, with L5 vehicles entering the market.

- By 2040, China will deeply integrate into global component supply chain, and become the leading automotive power in the world.
