The new energy vehicle (NEV) sector of China demonstrated its dynamic growth at the 2024 Beijing International Automobile Exhibition. Both domestic and international brands exhibited their products with equal prominence. This growth is reflected in the impressive export figures for the industry, where NEV exports soared to 307,000 units, marking a 23.8% increase from the previous year. However, the sector still faces significant challenges regarding transportation. This article aims to explore the innovative strategies implemented by Chinese firms to overcome these challenges and solidify their global standing.

Logistical Conundrum
The swift expansion of China’s NEV exports has outpaced the available shipping capacity, complicating logistics. In response, companies like SAIC Motor, BYD, GAC, and Chery have begun building their own ocean-going fleets. The urgency is high, as over five million vehicles were shipped from China in a single year, highlighting the need for scalable and efficient transportation systems.
Innovative Container Solutions
At the exhibition, COSCO Shipping presented an innovative container solution capable of tripling the number of cars transported per container. This space-efficient technology offers secure and cost-effective NEV shipping solutions, akin to 'sea apartments' for automobiles. COSCO’s approach has garnered recognition from leading vehicle manufacturers for its extensive global network, stable delivery schedules, and cost benefits.
Expanding Transportation Modes
Beyond containers, COSCO Shipping offers a variety of transport methods, including roll-on/roll-off ships with foldable car transportation frameworks. These frameworks allow car units to be stacked up to eight layers high in the ship's cargo hold, significantly increasing carrying capacity. NEV exporters have greatly benefited from this diversification, as evidenced by COSCO Shipping’s vehicle transport volume, which reached over 440,000 units in 2023, a substantial increase of 183.7% from the previous year.
Ensuring Safety and Efficiency
The risk of NEV batteries igniting during transit poses a significant safety concern. To mitigate such risks, COSCO Shipping’s latest vessels feature infrared temperature imaging and real-time monitoring systems. Additionally, the company’s focus on end-to-end logistics from production to delivery ensures smooth operations and an efficient supply chain.
Digitalization and Full Supply Chain Services
COSCO Shipping’s digital platform provides a real-time trackable vehicle export process, enhancing visibility and efficiency. The platform offers a comprehensive view based on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), focusing on the factory-to-customer experience. Importantly, COSCO Shipping provides a comprehensive logistics solution tailored to the specific needs of Chinese NEV manufacturers, leveraging its global shipping and port operations.
Summary
China’s NEV industry is employing smart logistics tactics to navigate the complexities of going global. By adopting innovative container technology, expanding transportation options, ensuring the safe transit of goods, and embracing digitalization, Chinese firms are well-positioned to meet the rising international demand for their vehicles. As the industry continues to evolve and strive for market dominance worldwide in the NEV sector, the prospects are promising.
