Chinese EV maker NIO has achieved a significant milestone by introducing the first mass-produced 900V drive system, named the "Thunder" electric drive system (EDS). Promising an extraordinary feature set, including adding over 150 miles (255 km) of range with a quick five-minute charge, NIO's EDS is poised to revolutionize electric vehicle technology.
NIO's milestone announcement coincides with the production of its one-millionth EDS unit. The forthcoming NIO ET9 premium EV will be the first vehicle to incorporate this groundbreaking technology. Unveiled in December, the ET9 targets the new generation of high-end business users, offering a combination of flagship-style exterior design, spacious interior, immersive experience, and efficient recharging. It boasts the world's first mass-produced 900V EV drive system, featuring up to 925V, 600 kW peak power, and 765A peak charging.
According to NIO, the ET9's electric motors are smaller and 30% lighter, enhancing efficiency and providing more interior space. It will utilize a 925V W-Pin synchronous permanent magnet electric motor with a peak power of 340 kW. Additionally, the EDS includes a 1200V silicon carbide power module with impressive power density and durability, complemented by a liquid-cooling system to optimize motor performance.
The ET9 integrates over 100 NIO full-stack technologies, including the company's first five-nanometer auto-grade chip and large cylindrical battery cells. Pre-orders for the ET9 have commenced in China, priced at $112,000 (800,000 yuan), positioning it as a strong competitor against luxury automakers such as Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
With its spacious interior, advanced technology, and impressive performance capabilities, the NIO ET9 represents a significant leap forward in the electric vehicle market, offering consumers a compelling choice in the luxury EV segment.
