New BYD Blade Battery Breaks 1,000km Range and Cold-Weather Barriers

BYD has officially debuted its Second-Generation Blade Battery and "Flash Charge China" strategy, featuring 5-minute charging and 1,000km+ ranges to challenge traditional internal combustion engine dominance and extreme winter conditions.

On the evening of March 5, 2026, global NEV leader BYD held a landmark technical conference to unveil its “Second-Generation Blade Battery” and the “Flash Charge China” strategy.

Eliminating Charging Anxiety: The 5-Minute Milestone

According to BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu, the new cells allow vehicles to charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes and reach 97% in 9 minutes. This performance effectively matches the 3-to-5-minute window required to refuel a gasoline car.

Furthermore, the Second-Generation Blade Battery boasts a 5% increase in energy density over its predecessor, which means, the new models equipped with this technology are now capable of exceeding a 1,000km CLTC range.

Conquering the Cold: Superior Winter Performance

Addressing a major pain point for Northern users, the new battery exhibits remarkable resilience in extreme cold. In temperatures as low as -20°C, the battery maintains near-normal discharge and charging rates. Even at a grueling -30°, the system can charge to 97% in under 12 minutes. This breakthrough significantly reduces "winter range anxiety," a factor that has historically hindered EV adoption in colder regions.

The "Flash Charge China" Infrastructure Strategy

To support these high-performance batteries, BYD introduced the Mega-Watt Flash Charge 2.0 system, featuring charging piles with a staggering 1,500kW capacity. Under the "Flash Charge China" strategy, BYD aims to build 20,000 flash-charging stations by the end of 2026. This network will include 18,000 "station-within-stations" and 2,000 high-speed highway stations. Currently, BYD has already deployed 4,239 stations nationwide.

New Flagship Models and Market Performance

The conference also saw the launch of the D-class flagship SUV, "Da Tang," alongside several high-performance models. The Denza Z9GT, powered by the new battery, achieves an impressive range of 1,036km. Other compatible models include the Yangwang U7, Fang Cheng Bao Tai 3, and Seal 07.

While BYD saw explosive growth from 2021 to 2025 — surpassing 4 million annual units — the start of 2026 has been challenging. Sales in January and February were 210,100 and 190,200 units, representing year-on-year declines of 30.1% and 41.1%, respectively. However, overseas sales in February surged by 41.4% to over 100,000 units, marking the first time international demand has outperformed the domestic Chinese market.

With the introduction of the Second-Generation Blade Battery, BYD is strategically positioned to reclaim its domestic momentum while solidifying its global footprint.
